Baby's Death in Southeast DC Being Investigated as Homicide: Police

The death of an infant who was found unconscious and injured in the Fort Dupont neighborhood of Southeast Washington on Sunday is being investigated as a homicide, D.C. police said.

Police said they responded to a call at about 9:35 p.m. and found the baby in the 4300 block of G Street SE with several injuries and was not breathing. They rushed the baby to a hospital.

The infant, identified by police as 3-month-old Skylar Newman, was in grave condition Monday morning and died Tuesday.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said the baby died because of blunt force injuries and ruled the death a homicide.

“I can't understand how someone would beat a baby to death,” said Dorothy Mesta, who lives across the street. “Not a little, innocent baby.”

No arrests have been made and no suspect has been identified. The Metropolitan Police Department is offering a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone with information that leads to an arrest.

Anyone with information is asked to call 202-727-9099 or to text 50411.
