Arlington County police have arrested a man who is accused of breaking into an apartment and trying to sexually assault a girl Friday morning.
Police say Jermaine Johnson, 30, forced his way into the apartment on South Frederick Street in the Arlington Mill neighborhood sometime between 7:30 and 8 a.m.
"She was up and about when the incident occurred and he held her at his will," said Ashley Savage, spokeswoman for the Arlington County Police Department.
Savage said for some reason the suspect ran off.
The girl was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. Police have not released her exact age.
Police said after the incident, they spotted a potential suspect matching the description of the attacker, but he got away. Investigators searched and gathered evidence at a nearby playground.
On Saturday, police said officers saw Johnson running from a residence on North Troy Street and chased him on foot. They arrested Johnson and charged him with attempted rape and burglary. He will be held in the Arlington County Detention Facility without bond, police said.
The girl did not know the suspect, police said.
