A teenage honors student was killed when a driver struck him while he was crossing an intersection in the Woodmore section of Prince George's County, Maryland, police said.
The teen was crossing at Church Road and Fairview Vista Drive around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday when he was hit by a car, police said.
He was taken to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The teenage boy had just graduated from eighth grade at Georgetown Day School, his mother told News4.
Now neighbors are hoping the accident will trigger safety improvements in the area, especially because cars frequently exceed the 30 mph speed limit in the area.
Police said the driver of the car stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
The family is now collecting donations through a GoFundMe fundraiser.
