A 12-year-old girl has been arrested for stalking a teen girl in Prince William County, according to police. And investigators say she had been posing as a teenage boy.
Police say between January and July 2009, the girl started a relationship with a 13-year-old girl online. During that summer, the two actually met on several occasions. In September, the victim's parents were monitoring their daughter's online profile and told her not to have any further contact with the other girl.
In October, the victim's parents contacted police. A detective told the 12-year-old to have no further contact with the victim or her family.
But after that, the girl tried several more times to contact the victim, as recently as April of this year, police say. The girl created several fake online profiles, posing once again as a teenage boy, and targeted the original victim and other girls in the area.
Officers arrested the girl last week. Police have not released her identity because of her age.
She's currently being held in a juvenile detention center, pending a hearing. Police say this is an example of why parents need to be diligent in protecting their children when they surf the web.
