The 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks is approaching and area firefighters are preparing to pay tribute to their fallen brothers in a very unique way.
Fire service members will participate in a Memorial Stair Climb at the Maryland Trade Center, a high-rise building in Greenbelt, Md., the morning of the 10th anniversary. Each servicemember will carry the photograph and biographical sketch of a firefighter who was lost in the attacks.
In addition, many will use air packs or carry hoses while others will be in full turn-out gear. Some will even be accompanied by rescue dogs.
The 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb is limited to firefighters. However, an additional event has been added so that everyone has the opportunity to pay homage to the fallen heroes. A 3-mile run/walk will be open to firefighters and members of the community.
The untimed route is designed to equal 110 stories -- the height of the World Trade Center's twin towers.
Prince George's County Fire Chief Marc Bashoor and other members of the Fire/EMS Department will participate in these events.
Registration will cost you $25, and all proceeds will be donated to the National Fallen Firefighter's Foundation.
