Georgia Gunman Shot Dead after Taking Firefighters Hostage

A gunman who had been holding four firefighters hostage in a home in an Atlanta suburb was shot dead Wednesday evening in a shootout with police when a SWAT team stormed the house, according to police. Police said Wednesday evening that one officer had sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the shootout, and the four hostages had "superficial wounds" and were "going to be okay." They had been taken hostage hours earlier when they responded to a 3:41 p.m. ET medical call in Suwanee, Ga., and police had surrounded the home and begun negotiating with the gunman soon thereafter. The gunman had fallen on hard times financially, police said, and was demanding that his power, cable and cell phone be turned back on. Local NBC affiliate 11 Alive reported that the home where he was holding the hostages had been foreclosed in November, and the county had begun eviction proceedings. The gunman had originally taken five firefighters hostage but had let one of the firefighters out to bring their fire truck back to the station.
