The Kansas City Star is reporting the Washington Redskins have agreed to trade for quarterback Alex Smith from the Kansas City Chiefs.
The newspaper reported there is no word on compensation from the Redskins. Any trades cannot be completed until the first day of the new league year, March 14.
Their sources said the deal is in place and will proceed. The Chiefs will save $17 million by trading Smith.
According to the paper, the quarterback is in the final year of his contract and have a cap number of $20.6 million.
NFL Insider Adam Schefter said Smith and the Redskins have reached an agreement on a new four-year contract extension, according to sources. Schefter said Washington is sending a third-round pick and an unidentified player to Kansas City as part of the deal.
The Redskins have two quarterbacks on their current roster: Colt McCoy and Stephen Morris. Kirk Cousins is a free agent and has been playing for the team on a year-to-year basis for the past two years after being franchise tagged by the team.
With the impending move, it is likely Cousins will enter free agency with no restrictions.
