Your Guide to Cinco de Mayo 2009

One hundred forty years after the small Mexican province of Puebla defeated the French Army, the United States is gearing up to honor Mexican pride and cultural heritage once again.

Here in D.C., along with a few authentic events and performances, we celebrate the best best way we know how ... with food and drink specials.

Check out these Cinco de Mayo events:

National Cinco de Mayo Festival: Join the annual festival located on the National Mall starting at noon on Sunday, May 3. The event is hosted by the Maru Montero Dance Company and will feature salsa, Mexican folk, mariachi and merengue performances along with food, games and children's arts and crafts workshops.

Rosa Mexicano: This upscale Mexican restaurant is featuring a first masquerade where guests are encouraged to don their best mask and Mexican costume. Two hundred of the costumed guests will receive a shot of 1800 tequila in a souvenir glass. Also for the special occasion, Rosa's will feature a special menu of shrimp quesadillas, fresh fruit muddled margaritas (made table side) and their signature guacamole en molcajite.

The Park: The Park at Fourteenth will be open at 5 p.m. on the 5th, also known as Latino VIP Night, to accommodate the early birds. There will be all-night drink specials courtesy of the Latin MBA Bar Association.

Tortilla Coast: Check out this Capitol Hill Tex-Mex fav. They will be offering the traditional happy hour specials along with their 75-cent Tuesday taco deal. Pithcers of specialty margaritas and a live mariachi band round off the night.

Haydee's Restaurant: Join this authentic Latin restaurant as they feature DC Mariachi, a band of accomplished performers from around the metro area. Band starts at 9:30 p.m. Beer and margarita specials available.

Cabanas: This upscale Georgetown dive is cutting loose for one night in celebration of Cinco de Mayo. A featured live band and a DJ will rock the house all night long. The relaxing waterfront location will put you at ease as the drink specials and Jose Cuervo deals keep you bopping all night long.
