Down With Chicken Fingers!

Embracing DC's youngest foodies

The grade-school set can delight in three-course meals at some of DC's trendiest restaurants during Kids' Restaurant Week, which runs June 13-21 in the District.

Untraditional kids' menu fare includes tandoori chicken skewers at Mie N Yu (3125 M St. NW), a "pop tart" of Pennsylvania mushrooms, brie and seasonal asparagus at Juniper (2401 M St. NW) and four-cheese fusilli at Zola (800 F St. NW). All participating restaurants are offering prix-fixe menus between 5 and 7 p.m., when adults pay $29 and kids (under age 11) pay their age. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Eastern Market Renovation fund and Miriam's Kitchen.

Restaurant week was launched last year in Chicago to combat slow restaurant traffic during the slower evening hours and the typical unimaginative (and generally unhealthy) kids' menu options, which generally means anything you can drown in ketchup. (Not that we've got anything wrong with Ketchup, mind you.)

Don't miss the week's kickoff at Eastern Market on Saturday (9 a.m.-4 p.m.) which will feature lessons from Bower's Cheese (10 a.m.) and Agora Farms (11:30 a.m.), and chef demos from Travis Timberlake from Art and Soul (11 a.m.), Greg Lloyd of Zola (12 p.m.) and Danny Bortnick of Firefly, along with his son Jonah (1 p.m.).

Parents, be forewarned: After sampling all the tasty dishes available this week, your newly minted mini-foodies may never be the same.
