WASHINGTON — Veteran D.C. meteorologist Doug Hill, who worked as a weather forecaster in the D.C. area for more than three decades, including 17 years at ABC affiliate WJLA, is preparing to step in front of the green screen and deliver the weather forecast for the final time.
Hill’s last day is Friday. He is retiring so he can focus more time on his family and church, WJLA announced in May.
An Air Force veteran, Hill was a police officer in Prince George’s County for six years before becoming a TV broadcaster.
Before joining WJLA, Hill worked at the CBS affiliate, WUSA.
In addition to his long TV career, Hill also appeared on WTOP for more than 15 years providing live weather updates every 10 minutes.
“You could not keep Doug Hill off our air,” said Mike McMearty, WTOP’s director of news and programming.
“He would call in on his day off. He would call in while he was driving— hands free we think. Anytime there was breaking weather news, Doug would call and we would throw him on the radio.”
McMearty added: “Doug is the consummate professional, an entertainer, a gentleman and true class act … And he has a pretty good singing voice. We will miss him and I know the Washington area will miss him, too.”
