Va. Woman Charged After Infant Dies at Unlicensed Daycare

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — A Virginia Beach woman has been charged with child abuse after a 4-month-old girl died in what police called an unlicensed daycare at her home.

Virginia Beach police say 48-year-old Marlene Rice was arrested and charged on Tuesday. The infant died on Aug. 15.

Police say Rice called 911 to report that the baby wasn’t breathing. Paramedics tried to revive the child but could not.

Police say there were more children inside Rice’s home than were legally permitted to be under her care. State law requires daycares to be licensed if more than five unrelated children are being cared for.

The cause of the baby’s death has not been determined.

Police say Rice declined to be interviewed when she was arrested. It was not clear whether she had an attorney.
