WASHINGTON — A man was shot by a security guard on Thursday afternoon outside a Fairfax County community center.
Fairfax County Police say at around 1 p.m. Thursday, a uniformed security guard at the Gum Springs Community Center on Fordson Road approached a man with two unleashed dogs in a ball field.
Police said the man then “aggressively approached” the guard with a knife.
“That situation escalated and eventually ended with the security officer firing one shot that did hit the man, who then jumped in his car and then drove off with his dogs,” said Emilie Voss with Fairfax County Police.
Voss said the security guard was able to get the man’s license plate number and that helped police locate him. He was found lying in the yard of a nearby home on the 2800 block of Joseph Makell Court.
Voss said the man was with his two dogs, in a field near a day care center when the guard approached. The security guard also told police one of the dogs moved in the direction of the guard, according to Voss.
The man suffered a gunshot to the abdomen, and the police department said he was conscious and talking when he was taken to the hospital.
Police are hoping to learn more about the circumstances surrounding the shooting from their continuing investigation.
