Road Repairs Bring Weekend and Overnight Lane Closures on I-495

WASHINGTON — The Maryland State Highway Administration has planned some major weekend and overnight lane closures that may affect commutes along the inner loop of I-495.

On the weekends of April 7 and April 21 SHA will be working on applying new asphalt and striping the road, which will result in overnight closures between MD 355 (Wisconsin Ave) and MD 97 (Georgia Avenue).

Resurfacing the interstate will improve the ride quality for commuters and increase braking actions for motorists Charlie Gischlar with Maryland’s SHA told WTOP. Set to begin the first weekend in April, but canceled due to inclement weather, the overnight closures on the inner loop of I-495 is part of a $9.5 million safety and resurfacing project that started last summer on the Beltway said Gischlar.

A major traffic switch at MD 97 (Georgia Avenue) and Randolph Road is also on the weekend of April 7. It switches traffic to a section of a newly built overpass. And will result in lane closures, turn restrictions and brief 15 minute total closures from 6 a.m. until 5 a.m. Saturday. This is part of a project to construct an interchange and eliminate the at-grade intersection with the addition of a bridge and on and off ramps, according to Gischlar.

Other repairs in possible changes in traffic due to road work this month:

In Prince George’s County:
Bridge deck repairs over Rhode Island Avenue will result in single and double left and right lane closure between MD 201 (Kenilworth Avenue) and US 1 (Baltimore Avenue) Sunday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The bridge over Ritchie Marlboro Road will go through some joint repairs Sundays through Fridays until mid-late April. That will result in single, double and triple lane closures northbound I-95 on the outer loop of I-495/Capital Beltway.

In Howard County:
Routine bridge inspection on the MD 100 Bridge over I-95 will bring about double lane closures in each direction of I-95 Saturday between 4 a.m. and noon.

In Anne Arundel County:
There will be a total road closure and posted detour due to a pipe replacement along MD 177 (Mountain Road) between Freetown Road and Caldwell Road. It will begin at 5 a.m. Saturday until 2 p.m. Saturday, April 8.
