WASHINGTON (AP) — The National Park Service is beginning a restoration of the C&O Canal’s first mile in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C.
The agency says in a statement that work began Monday on the $10 million project to preserve the structure and bring back mule-drawn boat rides to the popular stretch of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park.
The park service says the first phase will take 18 months. It includes reconstructing Lock 3 and repairing Lock 4.
The agency says pedestrians and bicyclists will be detoured around the construction zone.
The canal parallels the Potomac River for nearly 185 miles from Georgetown to Cumberland, Md. The mule towpath is now a hiking and biking trail that connects in Cumberland to the Great Allegheny Passage trail to Pittsburgh.
