Montgomery Co. Approves Millions More for Silver Spring Transit Center Fight

ROCKVILLE, Md. — The legal fight over the Silver Spring Transit Center has now cost Montgomery County taxpayers more than $12 million.

That doesn’t include the costs of actually building the facility.

The Montgomery County Council approved another $3.1 million Tuesday for the legal fight over the center, which opened years behind schedule after a series of structural and concrete issues. That is on top of previous spending approved for legal bills.

The new money shifts general obligation bonds and general fund dollars to cover the new costs. It keeps a park next door that was related to the project on track for construction this year.

Montgomery County settled a lawsuit over the issues with the transit center last month for $25 million, $3 million of which was paid to a contractor.

Councilmember Nancy Floreen called it “quite a movement of money.”

Overall, the total construction cost for the transit center, including litigation, now totals $151 million.
