Md. Lawmaker to Take Part in Panel on Retirement Savings

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — A Maryland lawmaker is taking part in a discussion about state efforts to boost retirement savings.

Del. Bill Frick will take part in the discussion, which is being sponsored by The Pew Charitable Trusts. Experts and lawmakers from Colorado, Indiana and Utah also are participating.

Frick, a Montgomery County Democrat, sponsored legislation that passed this year in Maryland to create a state-sponsored retirement savings plan for private-sector employees without access to a workplace savings program with their employer.

The law takes effect next week.

Employees would need to make the contributions. They can opt out of the program.

The law applies to employers that use an automated payroll system that don’t already offer a retirement program.
