Former State Police Cadet Sentenced to 1 Year in Fatal Crash

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) — A former Maryland State Police cadet convicted of killing a woman in a car crash has been sentenced to 1 year in jail.

The Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Office said in a news release that 20-year-old Sebastian Reyes of Mechanicsville was sentenced Friday. He had been convicted in November of criminally negligent manslaughter and other offenses.

Prosecutors say on Aug. 1, 2014, Reyes, who was a cadet, was speeding in a state police cruiser on the Capital Beltway. Authorities say Reyes lost control of the cruiser and hit a car driven by 59-year-old Karen Holt-Williams of Temple Hills.

Police say the impact forced Holt-Williams’ car into a concrete barrier; it was also hit by another car. Holt-Williams died at a local hospital.
