WASHINGTON — Fortune Magazine’s 2017 list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For includes seven companies that are headquartered in the Washington region.
The annual list, now in its 20th year, is based on feedback from more than 230,000 people and includes employee surveys about the quality of their leaders, support for their personal and professional lives and their relationships with colleagues.

There also is a Culture Audit management questionnaire from each company, detailing things like compensation and benefits, hiring practices, recognition, training and diversity programs.
McLean, Virginia-based Capital One is the highest-ranked local company on the list, at No. 19. Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc., also based in McLean, ranked No. 26 this year. Rounding out the top three local employers is Veterans United Home Loans, based in Columbia, Maryland, at No. 27 on this year’s list.

No. 47: Navy Federal Credit Union, Vienna, Virginia
No. 50: Mars Inc., McLean, Virginia
No. 83: TEKSystems, Hanover, Maryland
Google is the No. 1 place to work for the eighth time in 11 years. Wegmans Food Markets ranked No. 2

Great Place to Work compiled the list of top companies based on growth, profitability and stock performance among other metrics.
“The best know they can’t rest on their workplace laurels. The new, largely uncharted business territory is about developing every ounce of human potential, so that organizations can reach their full potential,” said Michael C. Bush, CEO of Great Place to Work in a news release.
The rest of the top 10 were rounded out by Wegmans Food Markets, Inc., The Boston Consulting Group, Inc., Baird, Edward Jones, Genentech, ULTIMATE SOFTWARE, Salesforce, Acuity Insurance and Quicken Loans.
