6 Virginia Teachers Named Finalists for National Award

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Six Virginia educators are state finalists for a national award for math and science teachers.

The Virginia Department of Education says six public school teachers in kindergarten through sixth grade are in the running for the 2016 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

The Virginia finalists are: Cari Del Fratte of Charles Barrett Elementary, Carolyn Harlow of Clover Hill Elementary; Kathleen O’Dell, Christiansburg Middle; Jerome Peck of Seneca Ridge Middle, Melonie Yielding of Ellis Elementary, and Julia Young of Deep Creek Elementary.

The award administered by the National Science Foundation is considered the top national honor for math and science teachers. The education department says the finalists were chosen from among more than 80 nominees.
