Charlie Adler Drinks on the Job

Wine connoisseur Charlie Adler isn't ashamed to admit he's a little obsessed when it comes to the art of consumption.

"What I think about all day long is eating and drinking," Adler said at his book party last night. "I love exploring things that make beautiful music in your mouth."

The president of was already popping a bottle of red and swirling a glass of vino before the first question was posed to him at the launch party for his aptly named new book "I Drink on the Job" at District in Adams Morgan Tuesday night.

"Can I drink on the job right now?" he joked.

A job like his requires a distinguished palette -- or not.

Adler said he loves to pair "funky" foods together. He likes to sip vino at Veritas, Cork and even CoCo Sala, places with small plates that Adler calls "a low-commitment date."

"One of my favorites is to pair the Virginia Horton Cab Franc with Szechuan beef. It's hot, spicy and sweet, all combos, which should not work with a red wine, but it does!" he said.

"Or try this -- Chipotle's Niman Ranch Pork with a spicy rustic wine like an Argentinian Malbec or Spanish Tempranillo. "

Anything goes, according to the man who admits that wine professionals always disagree.

"Bacon is a perfect thing. I'm Jewish, so of course I eat bacon," he joked. "But I'd say anything with bacon needs a Pinot Noir."
