8/31: Free Pizza, Peroni at Local 16

Plus, a Benefit at Acadiana and the Beltway Poetry Slam

BEER HERE: Local 16 (1602 U St. N.W.) is dishing up free wood-fired gourmet pizza and free Peroni "while it lasts" to benefit the Latino Economic Development Corporation. 6-9 p.m.; no cover.

HURRICANE HELP: Acadiana (901 New York Ave. N.W.) is turning five and has also been honoring the fifth anniversary of Katrina. Through today, a portion of sales from their roast beef or blackened catfish po'boys ($12) will benefit Friends of the Fisherman and The St. Bernard Project. 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.; 5:30-10:15 p.m.; po'boys $12.

TOTALLY SLAMMED: The last Tuesday of the month means it's time for the Beltway Poetry Slam at the Fridge (Rear Alley, 516 8th St. S.E.). Poets must perform original work that is three minutes or shorter. They're ranked on content, originality and performance, and are competing for a chance to represent the region at national and international competitions. 7:30 p.m. doors and poet signup; 8 p.m. performances; $5.
