There must be something in the vines near Harper's Ferry Road in Virginia because we must. Stop. At. Every. Vineyard. Along. That. Road.
Especially to visit the newest, 868 Estate Vineyards.
This contemporary winery opened i's doors in May and offers seven tasty wines, a sweeping view of grassy farmland and the only vineyard in that area that includes a wine glass with your tasting.
Pulling into the driveway you can't help but notice how young this winery is -- the vines are babies themselves. The estate itself is very attractive, with many areas for entertaining. The old grain silo only adds to the appeal.
We recommend staying for at least a couple hours, since there's the Grandale Restaurant on-site that features farm-to-table meals. This is also where they host many dinner theater events and live music.
Worth the Trip
In the tasting room you'll find plenty of local goodies for sale, including our favorite, Route 11 chips (that we devoured on the way home).
The estate is roughly an hour from D.C., located at 14001 Harper's Ferry Road in Purcellville, Va. Tasting fees are $8 for seven wines, including a tasty Bordeaux blend called Declaration Meritage.
