The roof over one of the D.C.-area's largest music venues collapsed early Saturday, covering the pavilion in debris.

No one was hurt when the roof collapased over an seating area at The Merriweather Post Pavillion about 2:30 a.m., a statement from the venue said.

Seth Hurwitz, whose company I.M.P. operates Merriweather Post Pavilion, said in a statement on Facebook that the company had been raising the roof gradually as part of a renovation project.

The roof was nearly ready to be permanently secured in place, the statement said.

"The winds of fate prevailed and decided that, instead of simple raising the roof, we should just go ahead and build a new one," Hurwitz' statement said.

Experts are investigating what caused the roof to fall, the company's statement said.

Merriweather Post Pavilion is a largely outdoor venue, but has permanent, covered audience seating in front of the stage.

The venue is currently closed for the season and the next show is planned for July, according to the venue's website. Despite the collapse, Hurwitz says programming will resume later in 2018 as scheduled.
