Britney Tops Charts, Sets Record With 505K ‘Circus' Debut

Britney Spears did it again.

The resurgent pop princess scored her fifth No. 1 album this week with “Circus,” according to Billboard. The release sold 505,000 in its opening week, making it one of the year’s best chart debuts and topping 2007’s “Blackout,” which bowed with 290,000 copies sold.

Setting a new record, Britney became the first act in the SoundScan era (since 1991) to have four albums debut with sales of a half-million or over.

Her previous chart-toppers included her 2000 sophomore album, “Opps! I Did It Again,” which sold 1.3 million in its first week; 2001’s “Britney,” which dropped 746,000; and 2003’s 609,000-selling “In The Zone.”
