House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is set to debate an opponent for only the second time since he was elected to Congress in 2000.
The Republican from Virginia's conservative 7th District will debate Democrat Wayne Powell before a Chamber of Commerce audience Monday night. The event in Richmond is open to Chamber members and their guests. Political analyst Bob Holsworth will be the moderator for the one-hour debate, which is supposed to focus on economic issues.
Cantor's only previous general election debate came in 2002 against Democratic "Dukes of Hazzard"actor Ben "Cooter" Jones. He also debated state Sen. Steve Martin in a 2000 GOP primary.
Powell, a lawyer and retired Army colonel, is making his first run for public office.
