A nonprofit that shapes young male inmates into role models, an organization aiming to end D.C. homelessness and a community group bringing small businesses and the arts to Anacostia are getting a total of $100,000 in grants from NBC4 and the NBCUniversal Foundation.

Free Minds Book Club & Writing Workshop, Miriam’s Kitchen and Arch Development Corporation are all winners of the 21st Century Solutions grant challenge. They were chosen by a community panel.

Free Minds Book Club & Writing Workshop is the recipient of a $50,000 grant to help incarcerated youth return to their communities and become leaders. Its re-entry program provides employment support, computer skills training and an apprenticeship.

Miriam’s Kitchen will receive $25,000 for its efforts to end homelessness. The grant will go toward its initiative “Raising the Voices of our Guests to End Homelessness in DC,” in which formerly homeless residents help currently homeless people transition into a more stable lifestyle.

Arch Development was awarded $25,000 for its small business incubator, which offers office and meeting spaces for the neighborhood residents. The money may also support its arts and culture center.

“The impressive three that will receive grants this year are making a real difference for the people and communities in our area.” NBC4 President and General Manager Jackie Bradford said.

The grant challenge is in its fourth year. For more information, visit our 21st Century Solutions page.
