NBC4 is currently recruiting students for our college internship program. Internships are non-salaried positions that provide a professional learning experience while earning college credit.
Applicants must be rising juniors, seniors or graduate students. Please submit a resume and cover letter for the positions for which you're applying.
Please state your preference of internship assignment, career goals and the dates you are available. You'll be required to submit written approval of a faculty sponsor as a condition of acceptance into the program. No volunteer positions are offered.

Assist producers in live news coverage and news gathering.
Handle tape feeds and logging of tapes on a daily basis.
Accompany crews on stories to learn technical aspects of news gathering including video, audio, lighting and set-up.
Handle daily office administration functions.
Demonstrate a working knowledge of business and economic issues.
Provide general research information and lend general support to staff as needed.
Schedule Requirements: Flexible.
Community Affairs
Observe and participate in the planning of weekly public affairs programs; assist in research, scheduling of guests and tapings.
Demonstrate good judgment, resourcefulness, confidence and a positive attitude in response to viewer comments and requests.
Demonstrate a working knowledge of word processing and internet navigation; assist with and participate in special community events and projects.
Receive and log Public Service Announcement for on-air use.
Manage multiple assignments with short deadlines.
Monitor team meetings, compose minutes and circulate final copies to team members.
Schedule requirement: 2 days per week, Tuesday and Thursday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Digital Content Interns
NBC4 in Washington, D.C., is looking for summer interns to help plan and develop unique digital content for our local media platforms. Platforms include NBCWashington.com, NBCInterns.com, The Scene and other NBC properties. These interns will play a major role in helping to ensure local content supports brand and audience growth initiatives.
Requirements:
Experience in shooting/editing, writing and/or producing
Available minimum of 3 days/week for at least 8 weeks
Own or have access to equipment (camera/non-linear editing equipment)
Flexibility, including the ability to thrive in a team-based work structure
Demonstrated entrepreneurship and innovation
HTML, Flash, Photoshop skills a plus
Must receive college credit for internship
Junior, senior or graduate student status
Finance
Assist Director of Finance, Manager of Finance, Senior A/R Hub Manager and Payroll Administrator with special projects and day-to-day functions
Research and assist with budget preparation; includes doing research on past year's payroll and union penalties
Assist with monthly closings: including input of journal entries into the general ledger system (People Soft 8.0)
Work with accounts receivable and credit collections making phone calls and responding to credit information for new clients
Must be proficient in Excel spreadsheets. It would also be helpful to have Power Point experience

Governmental Relations/ Legal Department
Assist in preparation of FCC filings and Congressional correspondence, update legal manuals
Sit in on Congressional and FCC hearings and draft short reports for key NBC executives
Work directly with senior NBC executives and see the workings of a top-tier Washington Law and Government Relations office
Demonstrate professional demeanor and excellent telephone skills
Have an interest in legal issues and government relations

Human Resources
Assist in reviewing resumes and intern placement
Track interns for FCC regulations
Observe and assist in the preparation of labor arbitrations and grievances
Assist in the creation and implementation of employee events and special projects

Meet The Press
Observe and participate in planning, research and taping involved in the production of a national network news program
Handle correspondence with the public, NBC Network, local and national press organizations and political contacts
Maintain extensive political research files
Assist in compiling research for weekly shows, as well as NBC Nightly News stories
Attend national press conferences, conduct research at the Federal Election Commission and Capitol Hill
Have background in political science/government, history or journalism
Possess in-depth knowledge of current events, a strong work ethic, outstanding communication skills, and the ability to work under deadline pressure

MSNBC/Washington

NBC4Washington News Interns
Interns are introduced to every aspect of our news operation, within a structured and supervised environment. Local news interns spend time in each unit: observing, learning, and participating. During their rotation interns will:
Learn how to shoot and edit in order to contribute digital content to NBCWashington.com's The Scene section
Accompany reporters and crews on stories to learn editorial and technical aspects of news gathering
Produce individual and team news stories online and for demo reels
Participate in brown bag lunch and bull sessions with NBC staffers
Handle daily office administration functions and assist on the assignment desk
Create individual special project opportunities
Interns should have some experience in journalism, at least in the classroom, but preferably in a television newsroom setting.
Schedule Requirements: interns should be willing to work a variety of shifts in order to get the best experience.
NBC News Channel
Coordinate live shots for affiliate stations, work with affiliate news requests and assist visiting news crews.
Provide general research information and lend general support to staff as needed.
Demonstrate flexibility and work well on team efforts.

Network News
Learn the news story process starting with the concept and progressing through research to writing and editing in the Network newsroom.
Learn the value of flexibility and teamwork in producing a daily newscast.
Experience the opportunity to examine NBC operations in the field in a professional capacity.
Work with Network correspondents in research and fact checking story ideas.
Must demonstrate excellent communication and writing skills and good judgment in responding to viewer phone calls and comments.
Schedule Requirement: Minimum 15 hours per week; must have flexible hours and ability to work weekends and rotating shifts.
Political Unit
Observe and participate in planning, research and newsgathering in the production of national network news programs.
Conduct extensive political research and maintain and update files continuously.
Keep in close contact with political campaigns, maintain candidate and political schedules/calendars.
Assist in gathering, logging and maintaining political tape.
Possess in-depth knowledge of current events, a strong work ethic, outstanding oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work under deadline pressure.

Production Manager
Assist production managers with set-up of locally produced shows.
Assist with set and props for segments of The Today Show.
Assist with basic office and administrative functions.
Demonstrate ability to work independently.
Respond to viewer calls on a daily basis.
Schedule Requirement: 3-5 days per week.
Sales/Marketing
Write and edit sales proposals and letters to clients.
Analyze and interpret audience research.
Assist staff with sales contracts, grids and administrative duties.
Assist in the production of sales presentations and videotapes.
Update client database.
Participate in internal sales and station meetings.
Accompany NBC4 representatives to external client meetings.
Demonstrate strong telephone skills.
Demonstrate working knowledge of Macintosh operating system, Microsoft Word, Excel and internet navigation.

Sports
Observe elements that go into producing television sports on the national and local levels.
See projects go from an idea to the edit room to the air.
Assist with the field production of live shots and features.
Chart sporting events and assist in production of highlight packages.

The Today Show
Field calls for producers and handle calls from viewers.
Book guests to appear on the program.
Provide research.
File daily transcripts.
Assist network correspondents with calls and research.
Occasionally accompany correspondents on live remote shots or interviews.

Gain hands-on experience running the website
Work on series of projects to assist marketing and sales initiatives
Catalogue NBC News archives
Manage the site’s Facebook & Twitter pages
Assist digital journalists and site’s assignment editor with publishing stories to site
Should have social media & organizational skills. High comfort level with Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint is a must.
Strong news judgment skills needed for monitoring the web and partners for content
Should have strong interest in African-American news and culture
Should have experience in marketing, web production, publishing and writing for the web.
Must receive college credit
Schedule Requirements: Must be able to work at least three days a week.
