Mutai, Dado Win NYC Marathon

Mutai crossed the finish line with his second major win this year

Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya won the New York City Marathon on Sunday, demolishing the course's record time by over two minutes.

That came as little surprise, given that Mutai, 30, had run the fastest 26.2 miles ever in Boston earlier this year. He was widely expected to break another record in New York.

The pair of wins for him this year also makes him the first person to win both the Boston and New York races since 2002. Expectations for him now look to the London Olympic Games next year.

Emmanuel Mutai, also of Kenya but unrelated to the winner, finished in second place more than a minute after his triumphant countryman. Ethiopian Tsegaye Kebede came in third, and another Ethiopian, the New York City Marathon's defending champion Gebre Gebremariam, was fourth.

In the women's race, Firehiwot Dado of Ethiopia surged past the race's frontrunner in its final leg and notched her first major marathon win.

Dado, 27, completed the course in 2:23:15, crossing the finish line 24 seconds ahead of her Kenyan rival Mary Keitany, who finished in third. Dado's fellow Ethiopian Buzunesh Deba came in second.

Keitany won the London Marathon and for much of Sunday's race in New York appeared set to win it, too. She ran below course-record pace for most of it but slowed at the end.

Mutai won $200,000 for his record-setting win, and Dado won $170,000.

The weather in New York on Sunday was ideal for the runners: crisp and sunny with little wind. A record number of runners participated.
