Maryland House Republicans said they want to reduce state spending by $621 million more than Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley's budget proposal for the next fiscal year.
The plan outlined Tuesday gets a significant portion of the additional spending reductions by not funding a program that compensates school districts where education costs more. That would save about $120 million in future fiscal years. The GOP plan also would eliminate the legislative scholarship program, which would save nearly $12 million a year.
Republicans made the proposal during a hearing on the state's Budget Reconciliation and Financing Act in Annapolis.
