McDonnell Writes Obama, Gates Opposing Command Closure

Gov. Bob McDonnell has written President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates blasting the proposed closure of the Norfolk-based Joint Forces Command.

McDonnell's letters join those of mayors from Hampton Road who have complained that thousands of jobs will be lost.

On Wednesday, four Virginia congressmen -- two Republicans and two Democrats -- convene a round-table discussion in Suffolk against the proposal.

Both of McDonnell's letters say the decision was made without thorough review and outside congressional guidelines for closing bases.

He said it will hurt U.S. military readiness and devastate Hampton Roads' economy, killing about 10,000 jobs in an area rich with military bases.
