New Jersey Fire Leaves Hundreds Homeless, Firefighter Injured

It's believed an electrical fire started on the fifth floor.

A four-alarm fire in New Jersey left one firefighter injured and hundreds of residents homeless.

The fire broke out at 9201 John F. Kennedy Boulevard in North Bergen just after 5 p.m., according to Mayor Nicholas Sacco and threatened to spread to an adjacent building forcing both to be evacuated.
The fire was so intense the smoke could be seen across the river in Manhattan.

It's believed an electrical fire started on the fifth floor.

"Problem is it spread to the loft, between the fifth floor and the roof and that's what made it so hard to fight," Casso said.

A firefighter suffered broken ribs after slipping on a wet staircase, but there were no other injuries.

Those in need of a place to stay were being offered shelter at North Bergen High School.
