Navy Yard Shooting: Inside the NAVSEA Operation That Was Attacked

The Washington D.C. headquarters of the Naval Sea Systems Command, the scene of Monday's shooting where at least a dozen people were killed after a gunman opened fire, is home to the largest of the five "system commands" in the U.S. Navy.

With a team of 60,000 civilians, military, and contracted employees, the mission at NAVSEA is to "design, build, deliver and maintain ships and systems on time and on cost for the U.S. Navy," according to its website. This means its team of engineers, buys, builds and maintains ships, submarines and combat systems for the Navy's current and future operational needs.

NAVSEA is active in16 states with about 3,000 employees who call the Washington headquarters home. It is located at the Washington Navy Yard, about 2 miles southeast of the National Mall, along the Anacostia River near the Department of Transportation and the Washington Nationals baseball team.

The Yard is the administrative location for the U.S. Navy and home of the Chief of Naval Operations.

The five Navy systems commands are:

Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA)
Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR)
Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR)
Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC)
Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP)
