Virginia Condo Complex to Identify Unscooped Waste Using DNA

A Virginia condominium complex says it will use DNA technology to crackdown on dog owners who leave their pet's waste around the property.

Beginning May 1, all canine residents at the Rotunda in Tyson's Corner will have their mouths swabbed for the "Poo Prints" program. A staff member will watch as the sample is taken, and a special tag will be given to each dog.

Whenever unscooped waste is found around the complex, a sample will be sent off for testing. Once the offending pooch and their owner have been identified, the owner of the dog will be charged the "current DNA Identification Fee (currently $90), plus a $10 mark-up for processing, according to the condominium's newsletter. The owner will also be charged an up to $500 cleaning fee.

All pet owners in Fairfax County are required by the county's code to pick up their pet's waste.
