Virginia Trucking Company to Pay $43,000 Fine for Fuel Spill

Crash in May spilled thousands of gallons of fuel

A Lynchburg trucking company will pay a $43,613 fine for a crash that spilled thousands of gallons of fuel in Bedford County.

Watts Petroleum agreed to the penalty as part of a consent order reached with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, the Roanoke Times reports.

A tanker overturned on U.S. 460 near Montvale on May 28, killing the driver and spilling about 7,000 gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel. A small amount of the fuel seeped into Goose Creek. About 5,000 tons of contaminated soil was removed from the site.

Watts Petroleum will pay the state $16,616.47 within 30 days. The balance will be satisfied by the company purchasing equipment for the Bedford County fire and rescue departments to be used in environmental cleanups.
