Speed Limit 15? D.C. May Have A Slowdown Showdown

Councilmember wants brakes put on drivers

A D.C. Councilmember is proposing a 15 mph speed limit on certain city streets.

The Washington City Paper reported Muriel Bowser, who represents Ward 4, submitted the plan to city lawmakers earlier this week.  The paper reports Bowser calls speeding cars a deterrent to potential walkers and bikers.

On November 1, the Council member tweeted out, "Should speed limit on residential streets be 15 mph? I just intro'd legislation to require lowering the speed limit. Let's talk about it."

The new lower limit would apply to residential neighborhoods only, not arterial roads.

The proposal has sparked a lot of online conversation, with some expressing strong interest, and others firmly against the idea.  On Twitter, one user wrote, "DC doesn't' need to become even more of a ticket factory."

Currently, neighborhood speed limits are 25 mph.
