1 Dead After Small Plane Crashes in Front Royal

A small plane crashed in Front Royal, Virginia, and caught fire on Saturday afternoon, killing one person, officials said.

The small, private aircraft crashed on the 1700 block of Ridgeway Road, Virginia State Police said in a statement. The scene is about a mile from the Front Royal-Warren County Airport.

The plane took off from the airport about 1:35 p.m., towing a glider, state police said. After the glider disconnected, the plane had unspecified problems and crashed on private property.

The pilot, Steven B. Zaboji, 76, of Reston, Virginia died at the scene, state police said.

The glider landed safely after the plane crashed, according to state police.

The plane that crashed was a Piper PA-25, the National Transportation Safety Board said on Twitter. That type of plane is widely used in agricultural spraying.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. The Federal Aviation Administration and NTSB have been notified, police said.
