Obama to Speak at Howard University Graduation Ceremony

Howard University students and their families will be celebrating graduation, achievement, and exciting futures this spring -- with President Barack Obama.

Obama will deliver the keynote address at Howard’s commencement ceremony May 7, the university announced Thursday. 

“The President’s commitment to education, especially for those who can least afford it, dovetails with Howard’s commitment to provide these same students with a rigorous, intellectually stimulating and academically challenging educational experience,” university president Dr. Wayne A. I. Frederick said in a statement. 

Obama, the sixth sitting American president to give the commencement speech at Howard, also will receive an honorary law degree from the university. 

Actress Cicely Tyson, physician L.D. Britt and former ambassador Horace Greeley Dawson Jr.also will receive honorary degrees at the ceremony.

Howard will award more than 1,300 bachelor's degrees, 300 master's degrees and Ph.D.s in May, including more than 400 professional degrees in law, medicine, pharmacy and dentistry.
