President Obama has authorized federal disaster funds for the District of Columbia and for Maryland after a blizzard dumped feet of snow throughout the area Jan. 22 and 23.
The declaration makes federal funds available to the District and Maryland, as well as to approved nonprofit organizations that helped in the cleanup.
D.C. has an annual snow-removal budget of $6 million and spent more than $50 million in the aftermath of the storm. In Baltimore, which budgeted less than $3 million for snow removal for 2016, the cost of January's storm is projected to be as high as $17 million.
"FEMA and District of Columbia officials will be working over the next several weeks and months to determine what activities and expenditures are eligible for reimbursement and the amount of federal assistance," according to a FEMA spokesperson.
Information regarding what funding has been released will be updated regularly on the FEMA website.
