University of Maryland Student Shot, Another Assaulted Near Campus

One student was shot and another was assaulted near the University of Maryland campus in College Park, Maryland, police said.

Officers responded to the shooting at a home in the 7500 block of Rhode Island Ave. about 8:20 p.m. Saturday and found two men with injuries, according to Prince George's County police.

One man was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound, and his injuries appear to be non-life threatening, police said. Another man was assaulted and was also taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A spokesperson for Prince George's County police said police don't know the motive for the shooting but do not believe it was random.

University of Maryland police said earlier in the night, some people who may have been connected to the attacks ran toward a Metro stop nearby.

Police are investigating if the shooting happened inside or outside of the home.

The owner of the home said he rents the house to five men who are students at the university.

Police told people to stay away from the area as they investigated. Police said there is no threat to the public.
