Police-Involved Shooting in Fairfax Co.

A man was shot by police after attempting to shoot at one officer

A man was killed overnight Sunday in a police-involved shooting in Fairfax County.

Around 11:20 p.m., two officers noticed two men acting suspiciously on Fry Road in the Mount Vernon area. They fled when police approached, but one of the men pulled a handgun and fired at the officers, authorities said.

He missed, but the officers return fire, striking one of the men. He was transported to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, and was pronounced dead shortly after.

The dead man has been identified as Nicholas Allen Kaelber, 21, of Woodbridge. The other man escaped.

The two officers are now on routine administrative leave.

In January 2011, Kaelber and another man were arrested while sitting in a car with a 14-year-old girl, after police searched the vehicle and found pornographic images of the girl who was with them. Kaelber was charged with possession of child pornography and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
