PD: Suspects Wanted in More Than 70 Attempted ATM Thefts

Prince George's County Police say more than 70 attempted ATM thefts have been reported in the county within a year.

In a news conference Thursday, police said they cases are likely related -- the suspects target gas stations in the early morning hours, use a crow bar to pry their way into the store, try to loosen the machine, but are often unsuccesful.

One of the most recent incidents was reported Monday at the Sunoco gas station on Kenilworth Avenue in Hyattsville. The thieves shook and pried the ATM but were unable to pull it from the ground, so instead they stole cash from the gas station's register.

"What we want to get across is that this is not easy and you probably should just stop. We are looking for you and we will attempt to prosecute you," Prince George's County Sgt. Terence Sheppard said.

A $10,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
