A man died in Waldorf when the minivan he was driving collided with a tractor trailer early this morning, police say.

Investigators say that William Mitchell Sr., 59, of Waldorf, ran a red light at 5:25 a.m., as he turned south onto Route 301 from the westbound lane of VFW Road. As he turned, a tractor trailer, also driving south, struck his car.

Mitchell was transported to Southern Maryland Hospital and pronounced dead.

The driver of the tractor trailer, 37-year-old Michael L. Dobson, of Wallace, N.C., was not hurt. No passengers were in either car.

An investigation is ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact the Maryland State Police at (301) 392-1200.
