UVA Lacrosse Murder Case Goes to Court

She was a popular lacrosse player from a Baltimore suburb just days away from graduation at the University of Virginia.

He was a star lacrosse player from Chevy Chase also on-track to earn a UVA undergraduate degree.

That was one year ago. Today, George Huguely is locked up in a Charlottesville jail without bond, and the family of Yeardley Love is left to mourn her death and find ways to honor her legacy.

Huguely faces first-degree murder charges for the killing of Love as well as five other charges. Investigators arrested Huguely -- Love's former boyfriend -- shortly after the killing. They say he kicked in her door, beat her head against a door, and stole her computer.

Today a judge will hear additional charges against Huguely, including felony murder, burglary, robbery of a residence, entering a house with an intent to commit a felony and grand larceny. After a few days' postponement, Huguely's preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday in Charlottesville.

Media outlets in Charlottesville report that Huguely's hearing was moved from General District Court to Circuit Court to accommodate the expected media crowd in the courtroom.

In advance of the hearing, Love's mother Sharon and her sister Lexie released this statement:

"We miss Yeardley so very much and will work tirelessly to honor her legacy. It is truly devastating to wake up each day and realize she is no longer here. Her bright, bright future was stolen from us all. Yeardley's contagious smile, kind spirit and gentle touch have left this world but we know heaven now has an angel like no other. We will never be able to sufficiently thank everyone for their outpouring of love, support and prayers. They have given us the strength to continue and we are eternally grateful to each and every one of them. We have faith in the justice system and trust that the truth will prevail."

On Saturday in Charlottesville, "The Every Yard for Yeardley Team" participated in a race, raising more than $18,000 for the "One Love Foundation" (http://www.joinonelove.org/) to encourage children to follow Yeardley's example of service, kindness, humility and sportsmanship. The Yeardley team ran more than a half of a million yards in her honor. The team's next event is a marathon, half-marathon and 5k on October 15 in Baltimore.
