McAuliffe Outpaces Cuccinelli in Fundraising

Democrat Terry McAuliffe's campaign outpaced Republican rival Ken Cuccinelli in June fundraising in Virginia's gubernatorial race, according to figures released Monday.

McAuliffe's campaign reported that it raised more than $1.9 million in June, compared to $1.1 million raised during the same period by Attorney General Cuccinelli.

McAuliffe also is leading Cuccinelli when it comes to the total amount of cash each campaign has available to spend, which becomes more important as Election Day nears. McAuliffe reported having more than $6 million in cash on hand. Cuccinelli reported having nearly $2.7 million in cash on hand.

The Virginia Public Access Project reported that Cuccinelli spent nearly $100,000 more in June than he raised, while McAuliffe raised more than $580,000 than he spent.

Both candidates issued statements saying their fundraising efforts are evidence they have growing support.

"This reporting period shows Ken Cuccinelli will have the resources necessary to spread his message of economic prosperity throughout the Commonwealth,'' Dave Rexrode, Cuccinelli's campaign manager, said in a statement.

McAuliffe and Cuccinelli are running to replace Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell, who is barred by Virginia's Constitution from running for a second term.

In the lieutenant governor's race, Democrat Ralph Northam reported raising $226,000 in June, compared with $118,000 by Republican E.W. Jackson, according to VPAP. Northam has $106,000 cash on hand while Jackson has about $90,000.

In the attorney general's race, Republican Mark Obenshain raised more than twice as much as Democrat Mark Herring. Obenshain raised nearly $480,000, compared with $206,000 for Herring. Obenshain has about $487,000 cash on hand, while Herring has about $127,000. Herring outspent Obenshain in June by a 5-to-1 margin, spending more than $300,000.
