Maryland Trooper Fatally Hit Pedestrian on Ocean City Highway

A pedestrian died after he was hit by a Maryland state trooper's SUV late Friday in Ocean City, Maryland, police say.

Police said in a news release Saturday that Master Trooper James Price was on routine patrol in a marked SUV late Friday night when, for reasons that are unclear, a man "reportedly darted" onto a highway.

The trooper hit the man on Coastal Highway at 76th Street, DelmarvaNow reported. The officer had been patrolling the Endless Summer Cruisin' car show.

Price tried to avoid the man but could not, police said. The man was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The news release says Price, a 17-year veteran of the state police department, was not injured. He was put on routine administrative leave.

The pedestrian's name was not released immediately.

A state police crash team is investigating, and the findings will be presented to the State's Attorney's Office for review.
