Maryland Judge Suspended for Mocking Defendant, Lawyer

A Baltimore City Circuit judge has been suspended for behaving in what investigators say was a sarcastic and demeaning manner.

Maryland's top court handed down a five-day suspension for Judge Lynn Stewart Mays on Tuesday. The order includes an additional 25-day suspension, which will be lifted if Mays has no conduct issues for two years.

Mays' attorney told The Daily Record that the judge has acknowledged that her behavior was inappropriate and says it won't happen again.

In May 2012, Mays admitted to mocking a defendant in court, asking his fiancee, "Where's the ring?" and telling the woman to sit down and shut her mouth.

Mays also admitted to telling a defense attorney to stop arguing with her, telling the attorney she would lose because Mays is the judge.
