Cab Driver Found Fatally Shot in Capitol Heights

A taxi driver was found fatally wounded inside his cab early Wednesday in Capitol Heights, Maryland.

Prince George's County Police found the victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound inside the cab after they were called to the 800 block of Balsamtree Drive, just steps from the Fairmount Heights Police Department, shortly after 1 a.m.

He was pronounced dead shortly after.

The victim worked for Silver Cab Company, which identified him as Kadir Yahya of D.C. He worked for Silver Cab for about a year-and-a-half.

The company said Yahya's last known pickup was at the Addison Road Metro station between 10:45 p.m. and 11 p.m. Tuesday. He dropped off a rider about 20 minutes later in Capitol Heights.

The cab has been towed from the scene. Detectives are working to determine a suspect or motive.

Police searched the area with a K-9 Wednesday.

"Different things around here happen like this all the time," said neighborhood resident Gail Williams, who can see the crime scene from her back porch. "...You can only do so much. It's just people. It's just the people. I wish it was better, but it's not."

A Ford Fusion that was parked next to the crime scene was hit and sustained damage. The owner said he was asleep when the crime happened.
