Man Charged With DUI After Driving Car Off White's Ferry

An intoxicated man drove his car off White's Ferry and into the Potomac River early Friday, Montgomery County police say.

According to police, the 26-year-old Gaithersburg man drove his car through a gate, onto the ferry, off the ferry and into the river about 1:30 a.m. Friday.

A ferry captain who lives nearby heard his screams and rescued the man.

Police charged the driver with driving under the influence.

White's Ferry was closed for several hours while crews worked to pull the man's car from the river. Police said the car was preventing the safe operation of the ferry.
