DC-Area Leaders Offer Sympathy, Calls for Gun Policy Discussion After Vegas Shooting

Police, government officials and candidates throughout the D.C. area are expressing pain, outrage and sympathy on social media after at least 50 people were killed in a mass shooting in Las Vegas.

Their responses were emotionally charged, offering sympathy to victims, gratitude toward first responders and anger or disappointment with current gun policies.

Officials throughout the region offered their thoughts and prayers and thanked first responders. 

Some officials called for leaders to sit down and discuss gun policy in the wake of the tragedy.

The Republican and Democratic candidates in Virginia's governor race both offered sympathy to victims and their families. Democratic candidate Ralph Northam said that the shooting should be considered an act of terrorism.

Republican candidate for govornor Ed Gillespie said people should take time to pray for the victims.
