Sean McDonnell charged with public intoxication: Charlottesville Police

The son of Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell was arrested over the weekend and charged with public intoxication, Charlottesville Police confirmed to News4.

Sean McDonnell, 21, was arrested at 1:19 a.m. Saturday while on foot on Wertland Street near University Corner, which is located aross the street from the University of Virginia campus.

Lt. Ronnie Roberts of theCharlottesville Police said the officer took him to jail for his own safety due to his level of intoxication.

Roberts said police will not release other details such as his blood alcohol content.

"This is a personal matter and is being addressed by the family," said McDonnell spokesperson Tucker Martin.

Sean was a high school soccer star in Richmond. He now attends U.Va. with his twin brother.

A court hearing is scheduled for Aug. 12.
